Graffiti Removal Project in Sidcup, London

Sandblasting Company recently completed a specialist graffiti removal project at Sidcup Youth
Centre in London, working alongside Cook & Lock Ltd and the main contractor as part of refurbishment works for Sidcup Council.
The exterior brickwork had been affected by extensive graffiti that needed to be removed before the wider renovation works could continue.
However, this was more challenging than a typical graffiti removal project.
The brickwork had been affected by both spray-painted graffiti and markings etched directly into the face of the bricks. This required a carefully controlled approach to remove the unwanted markings while protecting the underlying brickwork.
The Challenge: Removing Graffiti from Brickwork
Removing graffiti from brick can be more complicated than simply removing paint from a surface.
Brickwork can be vulnerable to damage if an unsuitable abrasive, excessive pressure or an overly aggressive blasting technique is used. Poorly controlled blasting can alter the face and texture of the brick, potentially leaving the cleaned area looking noticeably different from the surrounding masonry.
The etched graffiti at Sidcup Youth Centre created an additional challenge because some of the markings extended into the surface of the brick itself rather than simply sitting on top of it.
Our objective was therefore clear: remove the painted and etched graffiti while preserving the appearance and integrity of the existing brickwork as far as possible.
Our Brickwork Graffiti Removal Process

Before work began, our team liaised with the main contractor to understand the required finish and
how the cleaned brickwork would form part of the wider refurbishment of Sidcup Youth Centre.
Using precision-controlled abrasive blasting techniques, the affected areas were progressively cleaned.
The blasting process was carefully controlled to remove the spray paint and reduce the visible etched markings without unnecessarily attacking the surrounding brick surface.
Rather than simply concentrating on individual markings, attention was also given to the overall appearance of the treated area. This helped produce a more consistent finish and allowed the restored sections to blend naturally with the surrounding brickwork.
The Result: Clean, Restored Brickwork

After approximately 10 hours of specialist graffiti removal and blast cleaning, the transformation was clear.
The unwanted graffiti was removed, leaving the brickwork clean and uniform, restoring the building's exterior and allowing the next stages of the refurbishment programme to continue.
Cook & Lock Ltd were extremely pleased with the finished result and could continue their renovation works with confidence.
The project demonstrates how carefully controlled abrasive blasting can provide an effective solution for difficult graffiti removal from brickwork, particularly where conventional surface cleaning methods may struggle with heavily painted or etched areas.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Sandblasting Remove Graffiti from Brick?
Yes. Abrasive blasting can be an extremely effective method of removing graffiti, paint and other surface contamination from brickwork.
However, the condition and type of brick must be considered before work begins. The abrasive media, blasting pressure and technique should be selected according to the substrate and the material being removed.
This is particularly important with older, softer or previously damaged brickwork.
Does Sandblasting Damage Brickwork?
When incorrectly carried out, aggressive abrasive blasting has the potential to damage the surface of brickwork.
Professional brick cleaning therefore requires the blasting process to be carefully matched to the condition of the masonry and the finish required.
At Sandblasting Company, we assess the surface before determining the most appropriate abrasive media, operating pressure and blast cleaning technique for the project.
Can Etched Graffiti Be Removed from Brick?
Etched graffiti can be more difficult to remove than ordinary spray paint because the damage extends into the surface itself.
Depending on the depth of the markings and condition of the brick, carefully controlled abrasive blasting can significantly reduce or remove the visible graffiti while helping maintain a consistent appearance across the surrounding brickwork.
Each project should be assessed individually before blasting begins.
