Sandblasting Company was commissioned to restore two large steel fire escapes at a multi-storey car park in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
Years of exposure to the elements had caused the existing paintwork to deteriorate, with rust and corrosion developing across areas of the steelwork. The Challenge: Restoring Corroded Steel Fire Escapes
Restoring large external steel structures requires careful planning, particularly when abrasive blasting is being carried out in a public or commercial environment.
The two fire escapes extended across multiple levels of the car park. Safe access was required throughout the project, while surrounding vehicles, property and public areas needed to be protected from dust and spent blast media.
Part of the upper car park was temporarily closed to establish a controlled working area. Both staircases were fully scaffolded and enclosed with protective sheeting, helping to contain the blasting process and protect the working area from the weather.
Shot Blasting the Steelwork Back to Bare Metal
Once the structures had been scaffolded and contained, our team began shot blasting the steel fire escapes.
Abrasive blasting was used to remove the existing paint, rust, corrosion and surface contamination, exposing clean steel underneath and providing a suitable surface for the next stage of restoration.
Removing the old coatings also allowed the underlying steelwork to be properly inspected. Any areas requiring further attention could then be identified before protective coatings were applied.
Professional shot blasting is particularly effective for restoring structural steel because it removes deteriorated coatings and corrosion while producing a clean surface profile ready for recoating.

Removing Paint, Rust and Corrosion from Structural Steel
Corrosion can significantly reduce the condition and appearance of external steelwork if it is allowed to develop beneath ageing or damaged coatings.
Simply applying new paint over a deteriorated surface does not address the underlying problem.
By shot blasting the fire escapes back to bare metal, our team removed loose and failing coatings along with the rust and corrosion beneath them. This created a clean foundation for the subsequent restoration work and protective coating system.

The completed fire escapes were left clean, restored and protected, transforming the appearance of the steelwork and preparing the structures for many more years of service.
