Staircase and Timber Beam Paint Removal in Surrey

The Sandblasting Company Ltd recently completed a specialist staircase and timber beam paint removal project in Surrey, helping restore the original character of a beautiful 16th-century farmhouse.

Years of decorating had left the property's original timber hidden beneath multiple layers of paint and stain. This was particularly noticeable across the large oak staircase, decorative spindles, surrounding joinery and exposed structural timber beams.

The objective was simple: remove the old paint and coatings from the staircase and timber beams while preserving the original wood beneath.

Due to the age, detail and character of the timber, however, achieving that result required a carefully controlled approach.

The Challenge: Removing Years of Paint from Historic Timber

Paint removal from old timber can be challenging, particularly on a property dating back several centuries.

Unlike replacing modern timber, restoration work needs to preserve as much of the original material and character as possible.

The Surrey farmhouse contained:

  • A large oak staircase

  • Intricate wooden staircase spindles

  • Decorative staircase detailing

  • Timber beams and structural supports

  • Panelled staircase walls

  • Original timber joinery

Over the years, these surfaces had accumulated heavy and uneven layers of paint and stain, concealing much of the natural timber.

The staircase presented the biggest challenge because of the number of detailed surfaces, edges, spindles and recessed areas that needed stripping.

Removing Paint from a Wooden Staircase

Traditional staircase paint removal can be extremely labour-intensive.

A staircase contains numerous corners, profiles, edges, spindles and detailed areas that can make removing paint using conventional sanding methods difficult and time-consuming.

For this project, our team used carefully controlled abrasive blasting to remove the paint from the wooden staircase.

The blasting pressure and media were selected according to the condition of the timber, allowing our operatives to progressively remove the coatings and expose the wood underneath.

Particular attention was paid to the detailed staircase components where years of paint had accumulated.

Rather than simply stripping large flat surfaces, our team was able to work around:

  • Staircase spindles

  • Handrails

  • Newel posts

  • Decorative timber

  • Panelled areas

  • Detailed edges

  • Difficult-to-reach sections

This made abrasive blasting particularly suitable for the restoration.

Timber Beam Paint Removal

Alongside the staircase, the farmhouse contained a number of original timber beams that required

paint and stain removal.

Exposed beams are an important architectural feature of many period properties, but years of painting can completely change their appearance and hide the grain and natural characteristics of the wood.

Using controlled low-pressure blasting techniques, we carefully removed the unwanted coatings from the timber beams.

The process exposed the natural grain and texture beneath while retaining the aged character that makes original timber such an important feature of historic properties.

Why Use Sandblasting for Paint Removal from Timber?

Sandblasting isn't simply about using maximum pressure.

When working with timber, particularly old or historic wood, the process needs to be carefully controlled.

Pressure, blast media, distance and operator technique all influence the final result.

When carried out correctly, abrasive blasting can provide an effective solution for removing paint from timber, particularly where conventional sanding or stripping would be difficult.

It can be particularly useful for:

  • Oak beams

  • Exposed timber

  • Wooden staircases

  • Staircase spindles

  • Timber frames

  • Barn conversions

  • Period properties

  • Wooden doors

  • Structural timbers

  • Decorative joinery

The ability to reach detailed and uneven areas was especially important on this Surrey farmhouse.

Restoring Original Timber in a 16th-Century Surrey Farmhouse

Working on a property dating from the 16th century requires additional consideration.

The objective wasn't to make the timber look brand new.

It was to remove the unwanted coatings and reveal the original material, allowing the natural characteristics, grain and imperfections of the historic timber to become part of the property's appearance again.

Years of paint build-up had dramatically changed the appearance of both the staircase and beams.

Once those coatings were removed, the transformation was considerable.

The Result: Natural Timber Revealed

The finished project completely transformed the staircase and surrounding timber.

Layers of paint and stain that had hidden the wood for years were removed, revealing a much more natural finish across the staircase, beams and associated joinery.

The detailed staircase was particularly impressive.

Removing paint from the spindles, panels and surrounding timber allowed the craftsmanship of the original staircase to become visible again.

The exposed timber beams also regained their prominence as architectural features within the farmhouse.

Most importantly, the restoration retained the character expected from a property of this age rather than attempting to make centuries-old timber appear artificially new.

The client was extremely pleased with the completed restoration and the consistent finish achieved throughout the property.
