    Cast Iron Radiator Restoration, Paint Removal & Clear Lacquer Finish The Sandblasting Company recently completed a Victorian cast iron radiator restoration project for a property in Cricklewood, North West London, restoring 11 extremely heavy original radiators and retaining the natural gunmetal appearance of the exposed cast iron. The project involved much more than simply shot blasting the radiators. Each radiator first had to be carefully removed from its individual room, manually handled out of the property and loaded onto a suitable vehicle for transportation to our blasting premises in Hertfordshire. Once transported, the radiators were shot blasted to remove years of old paint, surface rust and corrosion, taking the cast iron back to bare metal. Rather than repainting the radiators in a conventional colour, the customer wanted to retain the distinctive gunmetal appearance of the freshly blasted cast iron. The radiators were therefore transferred to our paint shop, where a full clear 2K lacquer system was applied before being allowed to cure. Following completion, all 11 radiators were transported back to Cricklewood, where a large team was required to carefully maneuver the extremely heavy cast iron radiators back into the property and return them to their respective rooms. Before restoration, the radiators were covered in existing paintwork, hiding much of the character and detailing of the original cast iron beneath. Shot blasting allowed the existing paint, surface rust and corrosion to be removed from the complex profiles, columns and decorative areas of each radiator, taking the surfaces back to bare cast iron. Instead of covering the freshly blasted metal with another coloured paint system, a clear 2K lacquer finish was chosen to protect the radiators while allowing their distinctive natural gunmetal appearance to remain visible. Before Shot Blasting After Shot Blasting & Clear Lacquering How We Restored the Victorian Cast Iron Radiators 1. Removing & Collecting 11 Heavy Cast Iron Radiators The first challenge was getting the radiators out of the property. Our team travelled to Cricklewood to collect all 11 Victorian cast iron radiators directly from the customer. Unlike modern lightweight radiators, traditional cast iron radiators can be exceptionally heavy. The radiators involved in this project ranged from approximately 60 kg to 190 kg each. Every radiator had to be carefully manoeuvred from its individual room, through the property and onto a suitable vehicle. Their size, weight and location within the property meant careful handling and teamwork were essential throughout the collection process. 2. Transporting the Radiators to Hertfordshire Once safely loaded, all 11 radiators were transported from Cricklewood in North West London to our blasting premises in Hertfordshire. Carrying out the blasting work at our own premises allowed the radiators to be processed in a controlled environment using professional abrasive blasting equipment. The complete collection and delivery service also meant the customer did not have to arrange transportation of the extremely heavy radiators themselves. 3. Shot Blasting Back to Bare Cast Iron The shot blasting process took approximately three days to complete. Each radiator was individually blasted to remove the existing layers of paint, surface rust and corrosion. Cast iron radiators contain numerous columns, recesses, edges and detailed areas which can make conventional mechanical paint removal difficult and extremely time consuming. Abrasive blasting allowed these complex surfaces to be thoroughly cleaned while revealing the original cast iron underneath. Once the old coatings had been removed, the radiators took on the distinctive gunmetal appearance of freshly prepared cast iron. 4. Preparing the Radiators for Their New Finish Following shot blasting, each radiator could be inspected in its bare-metal condition before being transferred to our paint shop. The freshly blasted surfaces provided the clean, prepared substrate required for the new protective finish. At this stage, the decision was made to retain the appearance of the exposed cast iron rather than covering it with a conventional coloured radiator paint. This meant the coating system needed to provide protection while still allowing the natural colour and character of the metal to remain visible. 5. Applying a Clear 2K Lacquer System A full clear 2K lacquer system was applied to the prepared radiators. The clear finish protects the freshly blasted cast iron while preserving the attractive gunmetal appearance created during the blasting process. This gave the restored radiators a distinctive industrial finish while allowing the original Victorian cast iron construction and detailing to remain a visible feature. 6. 48-Hour Curing Period Once the clear 2K lacquer system had been applied, the radiators were allowed to cure for approximately 48 hours. Allowing the coating system sufficient curing time was essential before the radiators could be handled, loaded and transported back to the customer. With individual radiators weighing as much as 190 kg, the finish needed to be properly cured before the considerable handling required during the return delivery. 7. Returning the Radiators to Cricklewood With the restoration complete and the lacquer fully cured, all 11 radiators were carefully loaded for their journey back to Cricklewood, North West London. A large team was required for the final delivery due to the considerable weight of the radiators. The radiators were unloaded, carefully maneuvered back into the property and taken back to their required rooms, including carrying units upstairs where necessary. From initial collection through to final return, the entire project was completed in approximately five days. The Completed Victorian Radiator Restoration After five days of collection, transportation, shot blasting, preparation, clear lacquering and curing, all 11 Victorian radiators were returned to the property in Cricklewood. The restoration completely changed their appearance. Removing the old coatings revealed the original cast iron beneath, while the clear 2K lacquer system allowed the natural gunmetal colour and character of the radiators to become part of their finished appearance.     Restoring a 16th-Century Surrey Farmhouse The Sandblasting Company Ltd recently completed a specialist staircase and timber beam paint removal project in Chobham, near Woking in Surrey, as part of the restoration of a beautiful 16th-century farmhouse. Assessing the Timber Working on a property dating back to the 16th century required a carefully controlled approach. The farmhouse contained a substantial oak staircase, intricate wooden spindles, decorative detailing, paneling, joinery and structural beams. Scaffold Access, Sheeting & Containment Before shot blasting could begin, a full scaffold access system was provided around the steel staircase. The working area was then extensively sheeted and protected to create a contained environment around the fire escape. Containment is an important consideration when carrying out abrasive blasting on existing structures, helping control spent blast media, rust, removed coatings and other debris produced during the preparation process. It also allowed our blasting teams to work effectively across the different levels and sections of the staircase. 2. Shot Blasting the Steel Staircase Once the access and containment systems were complete, our teams began removing the deteriorated coatings and corrosion from the steelwork. Due to the size of the staircase, two shot blasting teams worked simultaneously to progress the project efficiently. A mixture of coarse crushed glass and aluminium oxide was used during the abrasive blasting process. The blasting removed layers of old paint, rust and corrosion while preparing the steel surface for the subsequent repair and coating stages. 3. Removing Rust & Old Paint One of the main objectives of the project was to remove the existing deteriorated coatings and corrosion rather than simply covering them with another layer of paint. Shot blasting allowed our teams to expose the underlying steelwork and identify areas requiring further attention. This is particularly important when restoring external steel staircases and fire escapes, where years of exposure to rain, moisture and changing weather conditions can cause coatings to deteriorate and corrosion to develop beneath the painted surface. 4.
